LA Lakers TV Network Coming in 2012-13?

On Twitter: @longisland495 “All Kobe, All the Time?” About a month ago, Time Warner Cable and the Los Angeles Lakers announced a new 20-year, billion deal to launch a regional sports channel for the Southern California/LA area. The channel will be, most likely, Lakers-centric. The channel will launch around the 2012-13 NBA season. Of course, being a Time Warner RSN, it already has one deal (and it’s not with Dish Network.). Their current deal with Fox Sports West ends soon. Los Angeles is a saturated cable market. Comcast, Time Warner, Charter, Cox, DirecTV, and Dish Network all own some portion of the Los Angeles/Southern California area in terms of cable/pay TV distribution. Instead of deciding to re-up with the regional provider from Fox, the Lakers decided that it was time to start their own TV channel in collaboration with cable providers ala what the New York Mets did in 2006 when they co-started SNY with Time Warner Cable and Comcast. According to the LA Times, though, a Fox representative said that they offered the Lakers a new long-term deal that was one of the most complex and financially beneficial in the history of sports television. The value of said deal could be on the decline, though, as the Sacramento Kings further their efforts to move into the LA area (Anaheim).
